Merrithew SPX Max Reformer

The Owner’s Insights on the Merrithew SPX Max Reformer

The SPX Max is my go-to when a studio is tight on space but doesn’t want to compromise on commercial features. It’s lightweight and genuinely stackable — the shoulder rests slide out and the units nest together — so you can clear a multi-purpose room in minutes, which group-class timetables love. The patented Retractable Rope System with recoiling reels is the detail instructors notice: quick to adjust and great for range of motion. Where the entry MPX stores upright, the SPX stacks and, crucially, upgrades — add the Plus Vertical Frame and you’ve got Cadillac functionality down the line. It’s also a CE-marked Class I medical device, so it’s certified for rehab and clinical settings across most of Europe. For a flexible, future-proof studio Reformer at a sensible price, the SPX Max is the one I most often recommend.

Why You Should Consider a Merrithew Reformer

Merrithew is the Rolls-Royce of reformers — exceptionally well-built, hugely respected, and well known in the UK despite being a North American brand. It’s now the parent company of Align Pilates, though the two hold slightly different positions in the market, with Merrithew sitting at the premium end. The trade-off is aesthetic flexibility: these are aluminium-framed machines finished in black as standard rather than wood or a wide colour palette, so they won’t suit every studio look — but as a pure quality unit, they’re about as solid as they come.
